Wouldn’t you rather relax and drift off, sedated, while you have your dental work completed? Whether it is for routine dental work, cosmetic and implant dentistry, or surgical teeth extraction, sedation dentistry is available to you.
Dr. Luksay has undergone special training to safely offer various options of sedation dentistry in Courtenay and Comox Valley including Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), Oral Sedation (pills), and Moderate IV Sedation. If you have a fear or anxiety from dental treatment, a history of dental trauma, a sensitive gag reflex, or you simply prefer to be sedated through your appointment, then sedation dentistry may be for you.
If you are a generally healthy adult, you are likely a candidate for sedation. If sedation is of interest to you, let us know and we can tell you if you are eligible.
Dr. Luksay offers IV and oral sedation, as well as sedation with laughing gas. Dr. Luksay is one of the few specially trained dentists in the area qualified to provide IV sedation.
Yes. To ensure the safety, we use monitoring equipment to watch your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels.
If you have any of the following, you may benefit from sedation: fear or anxiety from dental treatment, history of dental trauma, difficulty getting numb, sensitive gag reflex, limited time to get your dentistry completed, or you simply prefer to be sedated through your appointment.
Intravenous or IV sedation is used when oral sedation is not enough to facilitate a calm dental treatment. Sedative medication is delivered through a small needle or catheter placed in a vein.
You’ll need to be accompanied to and from the appointment, and you cannot eat or drink after midnight of the day before. If you take prescription medications, you should discuss them with your physician and dentist before undergoing IV sedation. Wear loose and comfortable clothing, but do not wear contacts, oral appliances such as dentures or watches and jewellery.
You will not sleep as it is a conscious sedation, but you will be safe and comfortable.
During IV sedation you will be in a “semi-awake” state that allows for reduced anxiety. You will be able to respond to verbal commands and light physical touches. You will not need any assistance in maintaining adequate breathing and heart function during IV sedation.
After receiving IV sedation, you will probably have little to no memory of the dental procedures performed. IV sedation has an amnesic affect. You will wait to be released until it is safe, and you will receive post-treatment and home care instructions including what you should eat or drink.
If you don’t want to be aware of the dental procedure you’re undergoing, IV sedation is a good option for you. IV sedation starts very quickly, and the drug dosage and level of sedation are monitored and adjusted to your personal needs. With IV sedation, the gag reflex is greatly diminished, and since you are able to cooperate with instructions, this makes all dental procedures easy to carry out under IV sedation.
Friendly and Professional
“Every time I've been to the office, I've been met with friendly and professional staff. I had IV sedation with Dr. Luksay and everything went smoothly. Dr. Luksay followed up with me the next day to make sure everything was okay. I then came back for a bite adjustment at no charge. Thank you for your great work and professionalism.”
